Donations are pouring in after a young woman and mother of three died while waiting hours for care at the Amherst hospital.

Allison Holthoff and her husband spent seven hours in the emergency department before seeing a doctor, but it was too late.

The 37-year-old died from unknown causes after her condition deteriorated.

A GoFundMe has raised more than $25,000 and donations are coming in from across Canada as people read about the tragic death.

An investigation is underway to find out what happened.

In a statement on Monday, Michelle Thompson said the investigation will determine “what happened, how we can do better and what we can do to prevent it from happening in the future.”

“I want to assure all Nova Scotians we remain committed to and focused on fixing our healthcare system,” Thompson said. “This is a tragic loss, and my heart goes out to them. I understand they want answers.”

Holthoff’s husband, Gunter, is speaking out about the ordeal to advocate for change within the health care system.

This comes after three people died last year in emergency rooms in New Brunswick.
