3 Charged With 2nd Degree Murder

Three people have now been charged with second degree murder in connection to the city’s 15th and final homicide of 2022.

On December 24th Thunder Bay Police located 21 year old Ivan Achneepineskum of Marten Falls First Nation at the Kingsway Inn.

Thunder Bay Police arrested one person, 18 year old Taliyah Wabasse of Webequie First Nation as she attempted to board a plane at the airport on Monday.

Meanwhile two others, 20 year old Draydin Bluecoat, also of Webequie and 19 year old Jayven Spence of Kasabonika Lake First Nation were apprehended by Nishnawbe Aski Police on Wednesday in their respective communities.

Each of the accused face one charge each of second degree murder.

Detective Inspector Jeremy Pearson says several aspects of the investigation are still underway including the cause of death.

“There was no firearm involved in this incident, in terms of the manner of death. We are still awaiting the final report following the post mortem examination. I will say it was a traumatic death certainly.

Pearson says police are not seeking any other suspects in connection to Achneepineskum’s death.

All three accused have been remanded into custody.
