Habitat for Humanity will build another home on Churchill Street in Moncton.

Executive Director Matthew Smith says they offer a program that gives lower-income families the chance to have a place of their own, “It’s a program to help them break the cycle of renting and gives them a safe, affordable home in a neighbourhood that allows them to build their family.”

Their plan is to build a three-bedroom bungalow home, that will be a pre-fab modular home for this particular build.

As a part of the program, the chosen family volunteers their time as a part of the build, “So, they would be assigned tasks based on their skill level. It could be as simple as painting or it could be more in construction depending on what their skill level is,” Smith says.

Habitat for Humanity usually has around one build annually, but Smith says COVID impacted that, and they are hoping to do more than one project this year.

Smith says the application form for the future home on Churchill Street is live on the website now, for families who would like to apply, “As soon as they read through the criteria, and they feel that it’s a good fit for them to move forward, they can submit an application at that time. The process is essentially going to be open for a little while. We would be starting to look into it in the spring, right around the time that we’re getting ready to build.”

The hope is the residence will be ready by summer.
