By Jakob Postlewaite Dec 15, 2022 | 1:03 PM

A chance to get a free hot meal in Yarmouth.

The Acts Of Kindness Society will be serving chili, stew and soup outside the Rose of Sharon Assembly Church, 19 East Street, on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Mike Wedge is with the society and says anyone who needs a meal is welcome to come.

“It want to just come and serve, come and serve. If you want to bring food, bring food. We’ve got incredible support from people,” says Wedge. “If you’re hungry, come. We’ve got take out cups and dishes or they can eat there.”

They’re also working to renovate the Rose of Sharon Assembly Church, a historic black church.

The plan is to put in a brand new roof, rebuild the back rooms of the church and replace some of the pews.

Wedge says they’ve partnered with the trustees of the building and their work will benefit the whole community.

“We’re giving the church back to the black community which is fantastic because the history of that church is just amazing. But in return we also get to use it for what we want to do which is feed people that are hungry, especially kids after school. They can come and get a hot meal.”

The society is accepting donations to help with the working being done on the church.

Wedge says they’re planning to serve more meals in the new year with the goal of ending hunger in Yarmouth.

He encourages people to get involved throughout the year by dropping off meals and volunteering with the society.

Wedge says they will be setting up a website where people can sign up to cook meals for those in need.

He also praised other groups working to end hunger in Yarmouth and hopes they can help fill in the gaps.
