Driver Fired After Near Hit Of A Student

By Adam Riley Dec 14, 2022 | 8:48 AM

A student was almost hit by the bus they were on after being dropped off by the driver.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon after what officials say was an unsafe drop-off, violating multiple key requirements in stopping and discharging students.

None of the students involved were injured. The incident was caught on camera by a parent which was sent to Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay resulted in the driver being suspended from any bus route pending an investigation.

On Tuesday morning the investigation had been completed and a report filed with STSTB, at which time the school bus company was instructed to remove the driver from any route servicing three school boards, Lakehead District School Board, Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board and Conseil Scolaire de District des Aurores Boreales, effective immediately and permanently.  A decision which the bus company fully agreed with and supported.

In the memo released by the STSTB says bus drivers must be held to the highest standards of safety, and that prior to obtaining a Professional School Bus Drivers Licence they must receive hours of specialized training on the road and in the classroom. As well they must be able to demonstrate their knowledge or traffic laws, policies, and procedures in addition to exemplary driving skills.

More than 10 thousand students ride the bus twice a day across the city.
