Downtown Moncton To Celebrate World Juniors

By Allan Dearing Dec 7, 2022 | 6:37 AM

The World Juniors are days away from taking over downtown Moncton and the event promises to be more than just a hockey tournament.

City venues manager Shane Porter says numerous activities are planned for the whole family.

“As they are making their way to the games, after the tournament starts on December 26, we’ll have a full week of activities before each game happening at the Moncton Market.”

Visitors from around the globe are expected as fans, families, coaches, players and scouts descend on the city.

Porter says there is a dedicated team to manage security given the amount of people coming into town.

“The plan is to make sure that everyone knows that this is a safe environment to be in, so that everyone can enjoy the tournament and the games.”

Downtown Moncton Centreville Inc. has been responsible for the pageantry including banners, flags and window dressings which are now being placed around the city.

On New Year’s Eve, live entertainment and fireworks are planned for downtown.

Before the tournament begins on Boxing Day, Team Canada will play two games against the Atlantic University all-stars on December 11 and 12.

Team Canada will also play Switzerland on December 19 and on December 21 will face Slovakia as Team USA meets Sweden.

Games in Halifax will be televised on big screens outdoors at the plaza of the Avenir Centre.
