For the very first time, Canada has awarded a female hockey player the Northern Star Award as athlete of the year.

Marie Philip-Poulin will take home the honour.

The 31-year-old forward and team captain from Quebec led Team Canada to both a world title and Olympic gold in Beijing.

She is the ninth hockey player to win since the award starting being handed out in 1936.

Montreal’s Carey Price was the last hockey player to win in 2015.
