Four people have been arrested in connection with a rash of copper wire thefts in the Fredericton and Oromocto regions.

RCMP says since September 2022, over 1.4 million dollars worth of copper wire has been stolen from businesses, homes, and government departments.

On November 23, a 33-year-old man was arrested and remanded into custody on unrelated matters.

The same day, RCMP searched a residence in Geary, where they seized a significant quantity of copper wire and related materials.

On November 29, police attended a location where three individuals were burning copper wire and loading it into the back of a vehicle. A 37-year-old man, a 38-year-old man, and a 32 -year-old woman, all from the Oromocto area, were arrested at the scene. All three individuals were released on conditions, and are scheduled to appear in Fredericton Provincial Court at a later date.

On November 30, police searched another home, this time in Haneytown, where they seized a significant quantity of copper wire and other telecommunication lines.

“These copper wire thefts have had significant impacts on our community, and our members have worked diligently to gather the evidence needed to make these arrests,” says Corporal Dan Sharpe with the West District RCMP. “We would also like to encourage anyone who is purchasing salvaged parts or metals to ensure the product has been legally acquired.”

If you witness suspicious activity near an electrical substation or power poles, always contact your local police. If you have information that could help further the investigation, please contact the Oromocto RCMP at 506-357-4300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
