Two women from Caraquet have died following a two-vehicle collision in the Acadian Peninsula.

RCMP were called to the crash on Route 11 in Pokemouche around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police believe the driver of the southbound car crossed the centre line and collided with the northbound car.

The passenger of the southbound car, a 73-year-old woman, died at the scene from her injuries.

Both drivers and the passenger of the northbound car were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The passenger, a 69-year-old woman, later died in hospital.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist and a member of the provincial coroner’s office were on scene and are assisting with the investigation.

Autopsies will be scheduled to determine the exact causes of death.

Route 11 was closed for about five hours in the Pokemouche area and has now reopened.
