Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed a 61-year-old was killed following a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 east of Nipigon.

The collision occurred shortly before 4 p.m. and close the highway in both directions for several hours after a passenger vehicle and tractor trailer unit collided.

The 61-year-old, whose name is being withheld as police are still notifying next of kin, was in the passenger vehicle. A second person in that vehicle received critical injuries and was taken to hospital, the driver of the tractor trailer unit was also transported by Superior North EMS to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing.
