Some of the best curlers in the country are coming to Yarmouth.
The Canadian Senior Curling Championships will be held at Mariners Centre December 4th-10th.
Arena One is being converted into five curling sheets for the event, which will host both men’s and women’s competitions.
Neil MacKenzie with Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Tourism says it’s huge for the region.
“It means a lot, because hotels will be full and there will be a lot of secondary spending. We have some great things planned for our visitors to push them out to other areas of Yarmouth and Acadian Shores,” says MacKenzie.
Some of the big names that will be in attendance include Al ‘Iceman’ Hackner and Sherry Anderson.
The ice is being made this week.
Local organizer Nick Hilton says three ice technicians are on hand.
“They will level out of the ice and flood it again, then paint the whole ice surface white. They’ll follow that up by putting in the curling rings and logos. The transformation of Mariners Centre is one of the coolest things about this experience,” says Hilton.
Over two dozen teams will be here for the event, with action getting underway this Sunday at 4 p.m.
