Approval For Canada’s National Adaptation Strategy

By Tim Davidson Nov 29, 2022 | 9:38 AM

Climate Proof Canada is giving it’s support for Canada’s National Adaptation Strategy released last week.

The group represents insurance companies, municipalities and environmental groups.

Spokesperson Craig Stewart says they were worried it might be watered down, but was pleasantly surprised.

“We had signalled to government that we were quite concerned, from what we had seen to date, that it was going to be too high level, it wasn’t going to have enough specifics to drive action,” says Stewart.

“They heard us.  They’ve really shored it up and the strategy released has quite of bit of the detail that we’ve been looking for.”

Stewart adds that the National Adaptation Strategy has both short term and long term targets.

“It says we’re going to release a national recovery strategy by 2028 and we’re going to figure out how get people back in their homes much quicker after a disaster than we do now.  That’s important because it takes three to four years to get people back into their homes following a severe event these days.”

Stewart also likes the fact the announcement last week included a $1.6 billion announcement for climate change projects and $500,000 for municipalities.
