Winners will open a location in the Halifax Shopping Centre this spring.

The new branch will take up about 38,000 square feet of space in part of the mall once occupied by Sears.

The move is part of a major refresh at the mall that will see old Sears space converted into 150,000 square feet of “retail and added amenities.”

Sears in the Halifax Shopping Centre Sears closed shortly after the company declared bankruptcy in 2017.

HSC says it’s spending $52 million on the redevelopment of the old Sears space. The project will create “new retail and dining options as well as an updated aesthetic” and a new mall entrance.

The new Winners will occupy part of that redeveloped space and a Simons will occupy another. Both are slated to open in the spring of 2024.

Simons is a well-known department store that’s based in Quebec that’s known for its “accessible and inspired fashion.”

The chain’s new branch at the Halifax Shopping Centre will be its first in Atlantic Canada.

Halifax Shopping Centre also plans to put a “full-service restaurant” in the former Sears space. There has been a fair amount of speculation surrounding that restaurant but HSC has not officially confirmed what it will be.

“We look forward to sharing more news about the redevelopment as we move ahead with the project,” HSC representative Stephanie Schnare wrote in an email to Huddle.

Mall management says the redevelopment of the Sears space will cost about $52 million. The project comes on top of the $70-million redevelopment the mall finished in 2017.

Halifax Shopping Centre is operated by Toronto-based Cushman And Wakefield Asset Services Incorporated.
