The Town of Yarmouth lit up their Christmas tree for the first time this season on Friday night.

The tree was donated by the Acadia First Nation to the town.

Chief Deborah Robinson was at the lighting and says they’ve donated a tree for the town almost every year.

“For centuries the Mi’kmaq people have always welcomed people into the communities and the territory,” said Robinson. “This way of giving and welcoming has been passed down from generation to generation.”

The tree was decorated by children from the local elementary school.

“For us, being part of the Town of Yarmouth’s tree lighting is a nice way to start off the holiday season and continue our tradition of giving to our neighbors and friends.” said Robinson.
