StFX Faculty Awarded Funding for Research Projects

Two projects carrying out important climate change research at St. Francis Xavier University will be funded in part by the Government of Canada. Two faculty members Dr. Andrew MacDougall and Dr. Dave Risk were awarded over $2 Million from the Climate Action and Awareness Fund to conduct their projects.

The fund supports projects that help reduce emissions and strengthen Canadas capacity to take on climate action by boosting climate change research.

Dr. MacDougall the coordinator for climate and environment was awarded over $1.5 million and will lead a project quantifying the climate benefit of nature-based solutions to the climate crisis in Canada. StFX is the lead institution on this research. He states that nature-based solutions to climate change enhance the ability of natural ecosystems and Agricultual systems to absorb carbon while providing co benefits for biodiversity and food production.

Dr. Risk, an earth sciences professor and the lead of the Flux lab was awarded close to half a million dollars in funding to conduct research on COntinues MEthane mapping in Western Canadian oil and gas towns, a project that will help manage urban methane and assist Canada in achieving net zero by 2050.
