How much money is being spent by funding partners for the World Juniors next month?

More than $5,000,000 is expected from the various levels of government as Moncton and Halifax co-host the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship starting on Boxing Day.

The City of Moncton has agreed to spend $750,000 on the event which local organizers believe will boost tourism during a typically quiet period.

Moncton City Council approved the funding during a regular meeting on Monday which will come from an operating reserve ($400,000), Events Moncton ($250,000) and Destination Moncton-Dieppe ($100,000).

The province of New Brunswick will contribute $1,250,000 according to Mark Taylor, a spokesperson with the Department of Tourism.

Halifax Regional Municipality said it will spend $1,000,000 and pending approval, the province of Nova Scotia is expected to spend twice that amount.

No commitment has been made yet from the federal government.

The tournament will run from December 26 to January 5.
