Moncton City Council has approved amendments to the city’s Taxi, Limousine and Vehicle for Hire bylaw which includes drivers providing proof of having an HST registration number, something required under federal law.
At Monday’s regular council meeting, Chris Winchester, who represents the Greater Moncton Taxi Association, applauded the changes and noted how some drivers are corrupt.
“They could be collecting unemployment, welfare, Canada Pension – and yes they are allowed to earn so much. But they’re not declaring anything. By having this HST number, it is going to make it a level playing field and legal for everybody,” noted Winchester.
The Canada Revenue Agency requires self-employed taxi operators to register for an HST registration number which can be done online or over the phone at no charge.
Another change will mean applicants will have one year to successfully complete the provincial oral proficiency test in either official language with a rating of at least Basic Plus (1+).
Moncton community safety director and fire chief Conrad Landry told council that the amendments will allow enforcement.
“We could do a task force operation with police and do road checks or we could just stop them or ask them to come in and submit their documentation. So this bylaw gives us the right to do that,” added Landry.
