Vandalism Plagued Holiday Lights Display In 2022

By Allan Dearing Nov 21, 2022 | 4:50 AM

The holiday season officially kicks off in Riverview later this week with the annual Christmas lights display along the Petitcodiac River known as ‘Light Up Riverview’.

However, the display has been plagued by vandalism in 2022.

Mayor Andrew LeBlanc said vandals caused a great deal of damage to the tune of roughly $60,000.

“We switched over to aluminum wires instead of copper wires. We’re hoping that that’ll be a deterrent to prevent any sort of theft or anything like that in the future. Also, there are a few other measures that Parks and Recreation is looking at,” LeBlanc noted.

“We’re trying to make sure that we can take care of those lights as best we can because it’s one of those new treasures that our residents just love.”

The lights will be turned on Thursday at 7 p.m. during a festive evening along the Riverfront Trail and residents are invited to attend.

Light Up Riverview will run November 24 until January 8.
