The Sipekne’katik First Nation elected their first female chief.

Michelle Glasgow won a tightly contested race by 18 votes on November 2nd

She beat out former chief Mike Sack, who came in third behind Brandon Maloney.

Sack served three terms as chief, and was heavily involved in the first nation’s out of season lobster fishery in St. Mary’s Bay.

The fishery has resulted in several trap seizures by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Sack was arrested on launch day in 2021.

In a post on her Facebook page, Glasgow says she believes her people’s treaty rights need to be protected.

She says the community were left out of a lot of important conversations and decisions.
