With just over two weeks away the final preparations ahead of the 2022 Para Hockey Cup are now underway.

The four-team tournament is being hosted at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia which was selected in part because of the accessibility options it offers.

This four-team event will feature Team Canada, Italy, Czechia, and the USA.

“As part of the bidding process for para hockey events you need to provide an idea of the accessible accommodations available to athletes and fans, our facility is designed with these things in mind, and the other infrastructure around Bridgewater means we essentially had everything that was required already,” said LCLC Host Committee Member Kent Walsh.

Bridgewater and the LCLC also have experience hosting international para-hockey events having hosted the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge. This year’s event will mark the third Hockey Canada event hosted at the LCLC having also hosted the Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, in 2018.

The spin off associated with this event will include a $15,000 legacy plan that will be allocated to Developing existing programs, developing new programs, junior development camps and High Performance team assistance. As well as the awareness and support this caliber of event fosters in our community and across the province.

Along with the social benefits to hosting, the 2016 event accounted for over $900,000 in economic activity in the province, of which $600,000 occurred in and around Bridgewater.

Walsh explained that despite the recent controversy surrounding Hockey Canada they opted to move forward with the event, “There is a pretty big distinction between what’s going on with the men’s program and the reception that’s being had with the women and para so it’s unfair to lump it all in together.
