Your quarterly water bill will higher starting in December.

The provinces regulator has approved Halifax Water’s application for a rate increase. Rates will increase by 3.6 per cent in December and 3.6 per cent in April 2023.

Halifax Water requested the increase to help modernize its infrastructure and cover capital costs.

General Manager Cathie O’Toole explains even with the increase they are still in a deficit due to higher fuel, chemical and construction costs.

“Even with the approval of the requested rate increases, the utility will still be operating at a deficit as inflationary pressures around items like fuel, chemical costs, and construction-related activities have continued to increase,” said the utility’s general manager Cathie O’Toole.

It is the first increase in these rates in about six years.
