Muskies Girls Reach Final

The Fort Frances Muskies girls’ hockey team will play in the final of the Husky Classic after a 2-1 shootout win over the Jeanne Sauve Olympiens Saturday afternoon.

The Muskies were trailing 1-0 before Kiera Fairnington scored on the powerplay with 16.9 seconds left in regulation to force overtime where nothing was decided.

Raelle Redford and Jerzi Calder notched goals in the shootout to send the Muskies into the A-side final against NorWOSSA rivals St. Thomas Aquinas Saints from Kenora.

Netminder Maddie Bliss stopped 34 of 35 shots in net and was named team MVP in the game.

The Muskies started the tournament with a 1-0 loss to the Sanford Sabres on Thursday.

The team rallied for a pair of shutout wins on Friday, beating the St. John’s-Ravencourt 5-0 and the Churchill Bulldogs 3-0 to finish second in their division.

Redford, with 2, Ella Evans, Calder, and Marlee Bliss scored against St. John’s-Ravenscourt. Danielle Schramm was in net for the shutout.

Evans, Bliss and Fairnington scored against Churchill. Maddy Bliss kept the opposition scoreless in net.

Game time of the final is set for 10:15 a.m.
