A big celebration is planned in Riverview next year to mark its 50th anniversary.

The Town of Riverview was officially created on July 9, 1973.

Councillor Heath Johnson, head of the celebration committee, told town council that the plan is to have much more than just a one day event to mark the occasion.

“If we tried to do everything on that one day, we might not get as much attendance. Since it’s worth celebrating, why don’t we spread things out through all of our festivals during the entire year,” noted Johnson.

“So when we have winter carnival, there might be a special 50th anniversary event as part of winter carnival. We could enhance some of the activities… maybe that means a bigger fireworks display.”

Johnson said community groups will be encouraged to host anniversary activities as well and would have access to grants from the town.

Some of the other golden anniversary ideas include creating a time capsule, putting the spotlight on local businesses or giving each resident a tree to plant.

The cost of the celebration has three price points ranging from $50,000 to $100,000.

Town council is expected to make a final decision during budget deliberations in November.
