Seven organizations in the Tri-Counties will benefit from $203,390 to support health and wellness.

It’s coming from the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia’s Reciprocity Health Fund.

Grants and Engagement Manager Emma Kay Sarty discussed the goals of the fund.

“The most important direction of the fund is that it’s going towards new health related activities and preventative health measures for reducing health inequality and improving the overall wellness of the people living in the Tri-County area.”

The recipients are:

  • Rotary Club of Yarmouth – $12,800
  • SchoolsPlus Yarmouth – $6,500
  • Tri-Country Women’s Centre – $71,100
  • Tri-County LiveWell Community Wellness Initiative – $70,000
  • Yarmouth County Historical Society – $1,900
  • Yarmouth Life Skills for Disabled Adults – $16,840
  • Victorian Order of Nurses Tri-County – $24,250

Sarty says the direction of the fund is coming from an anonymous donor.

“Someone local to the Yarmouth County area who saw the need and wanted to leave a long lasting, enduring, impact on their community.”

It’s the first year for the fund and it will be given out annually. Major parts of the fund include addressing health inequality and food insecurity.”

The Community Foundation of Nova Scotia says the province’s large rural population is made more vulnerable by the shortage of primary care physicians and access to mental health services.
