A 23-year-old man from Mayfield has been arrested for impaired driving after reportedly hitting a police car in St. Stephen.

Mounties say an officer patrolling King Street around 2 a.m. Sunday saw a vehicle quickly closing in on him.

“The vehicle struck the police car, passed it from the right, hitting the curb and a power pole, and narrowly missed a pedestrian who was on the sidewalk,” RCMP said in a news release on Thursday.

According to police, the driver sped away from the scene and continued on King Street for another kilometre before pulling over.

The driver was arrested at the scene and taken to the St. Stephen RCMP detachment to be given breathalyzer tests.

“The tests registered more than twice the legal alcohol limit,” said the RCMP release.

The man was later released from custody and has a court date in February. He was issued a 90-day driving suspension and his vehicle was impounded.
