Over 80 School Business Employees Union workers rallied in front of MLA Ernie Steeves office on Mountain Road in Moncton over the weekend.

They’re demanding higher wages and a better contract.

Local President Michael White says it expired in September 2019, “Everything is going up, our wages are going down. If we accept what is on the table today at two percent and forget all of the other horrible things that are in our current contract that we are trying to change, we will be in the hole 8.32 percent at the end of five years.”

The Union represents over 330 employees in transportation, facilities, budget and accounting, IT and community outreach, and student support programs.

“We have retention issues, and it’s hard to fill the jobs we have because out in the private sector, they’re coming out ahead of the game. They’re realising that private employers are paying more,” White adds.

The union is also asking for improvements to working conditions that bring them in line with others working for the Province, and they are also looking for better overtime compensation.

SBEU is a directly chartered local of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).
