Renous Inmate Death Deemed Homicide

New Brunswick RCMP’s Major Crime Unit is investigating the death of an inmate at the federal prison in Renous as a homicide.

On Thursday (October 6) around 5:20 p.m., Blackville RCMP members responded to a report of an assault at the Atlantic Institution in Renous.

A 49-year-old man who was an inmate was found badly injured in his cell.

Police say he was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries where he later died.

Mounties are investigating the man’s death as a homicide.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has identified the inmate as Richard King who had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which began on June 18, 2007, for second degree murder.

CSC says the inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

An autopsy was scheduled to help determine the cause of death.

No other details have been released as the investigation continues.
