Electoral Boundaries Meeting Tonight In Kenora

By Adam Riley Oct 4, 2022 | 7:30 AM

There will be another chance for the public to speak to a proposal from the Electoral Boundaries Commission in Kenora tonight, that would see the Thunder Bay – Rainy River riding absorb parts of the Kenora Riding.

This is the second of two in-person public sessions taking place in the northwest.

The first occured last night in Sioux Lookout.

The proposal would see several communities, including Kenora, Dryden and Ignace, merge into a renamed “Kenora-Thunder Bay- Rainy River” riding.

Red Lake, Ear Falls, and Sioux Lookout would become part of a new riding called ‘Kiiwetinoong-Muskegowuk,’ which would encompass all of the far north from the Manitoba border straight through to the Quebec border.

Several organizations, municipalities and political leaders from across the region have spoken out against the proposal, citing concerns it will reduce representation. Many have also taken issue with the lack of access.

The meetings in Sioux Lookout and Kenora are the only in-person meetings taking place in northwestern Ontario, with remaining opportunities being virtual or in the eastern and southern portions of Ontario.

The tonight’s meeting will take place at The Muse at 6:30 p.m. local time.
