In an important year for the cruise ship industry, Saint John will reach its own impressive milestone on Thursday.

Port Saint John will welcome the three millionth cruise ship passenger on one of three ships visiting the city: Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Breakaway, or Voyager of the Seas.

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the cruise ship industry restarted in the Port City earlier this year.

It all begin in 1989 when the Cunard Princess was diverted to the city from Bermuda due to a hurricane.

The industry now brings $68 million of economic impact to the region annually.

“This milestone represents many years of hard work by past and present port staff and countless stakeholders who, year after year, continue to warmly welcome cruise passengers to our beautiful, historic city and the breathtaking Bay of Fundy region,” said Natalie Allaby, Cruise Development Manager.

“Our focus on improving and enhancing our cruise passenger experience will mean continued and sustainable growth, and more milestones to celebrate, in the years to come.”

Andrew Dixon is the chief operating officer at Port Saint John.

“Yet another cruise milestone for our city and region! This is cause for a double celebration as we officially move beyond the pandemic shut down and celebrate 3 million visitors. The future is bright for Port Saint John and Cruise!” Dixon said.

To celebrate reaching the milestone and the restart of the cruise industry, there will be a fireworks show on Thursday starting at 8:30 p.m. as long as the weather cooperates. A rain date of October 5th has been set for the fireworks.

A selected passenger will be recognized by Port Saint John as the 3 millionth guest with a special curated gift basket of New Brunswick items and treats.
