Halifax bridge closures over next six weekends

Get set for some weekend bottlenecks. One of the two bridges crossing Halifax harbour will be closed during each of the next six weekends to allow for necessary maintenance.

Five of the closures, including the Thanksgiving weekend, will impact the Macdonald Bridge. One will close the MacKay Bridge.

HHB closes individual lanes on a regular basis to carry out as much required maintenance as possible, but full closures are needed to carry out projects like resurfacing and bearing replacements. Those can’t be done with traffic moving on the bridge.

HHB recently released a video to help motorists understand the reasons behind our closures.

Closures begin at 7 p.m. on the first day of the scheduled closure, and the bridge will reopen to traffic at 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Here’s a look at the upcoming planned closures for both bridges:

Macdonald Bridge:

Sept. 29 – Oct. 3 – Full closure, bikeway and sidewalk open

Oct. 8-10 – Full closure, bikeway and sidewalk closed

Oct. 15-16 – Full closure, bikeway and sidewalk open

Oct. 29-30 – Full closure, bikeway and sidewalk closed

Nov. 5-6 – Full closure, bikeway and sidewalk closed

MacKay Bridge:

Oct. 22-23 – Full closure

All planned bridge closures are weather dependent, and subject to change. Updates will be posted online and on social media.
