Houston Upset With Cell Companies As Outages From Fiona Continue

By Kevin Northup Sep 28, 2022 | 12:24 PM

Premier Tim Houston and John Lohr, Housing Minister, speak at a media conference in September, 2022.

Nova Scotia’s Premier is asking telecommunications companies to do better.

In the wake of Hurricane Fiona, Tim Houston says they need to provide more information about service outages in case of emergencies.

He says it’s been four days without service for many in the province, which means they’re not able to call 911.

Houston wrote to Francois-Philippe Champagne, the federal minister of telecommunications about the issue.

He says it’s unacceptable that people can’t connect with their loved ones, and the companies need to step up and be more transparent.

Houston says when the province’s emergency management office asked the companies to send a representative to the Provincial Coordination Centre, only Bell sent someone after complaints to senior leadership.
