The Canadian Armed Forces are providing aid as Atlantic Canada recovers from Fiona.

Joint Task Force Atlantic Commander Rear Admiral Brian Santarpia says Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and P.E.I all requested aid from the military.

He says there is a company plus in each province.

“In Nova Scotia there’s a company plus, well over 100 people, up and receiving tasks in the Cape Breton area,” says Santarpia. “The command control element will move forward from Truro up to Cape Breton and manage that situation there.”

Santarpia says troops are helping clear away debris so crews can work to restore power.

He says they are working with municipalities to get the work done.

“Each of the immediate response units across the country have pack up kits that are designed to help out, what we don’t have are the right sort of vehicles to haul things away,” says Santarpia. “We work hand and glove with the municipalities in order to take tasks on that involve clearing away of debris.”
