Local Sports Wrap for Monday, September 26

The Fort Frances Lakers dropped their opening game of the 2022-23 SIJHL campaign on Saturday, falling 8-1 to the Thunder Bay North Stars at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Brandon Kelly had the Lakers’ lone goal.

The Lakers next see actions this Friday and Saturday in Red Laker against the Miners.

 

In high school football, the Fort Frances Muskies lost 34-27 to the Churchill Bulldogs in a game played in Winnipeg on Friday.

Receiver Hayden Beckett scored two touchdowns, kicked three field goals and threw for a two-point conversion.

Quarterback Parker Booth threw two touchdown passes, one each to Beckett and Seamus Barkley.

The Muskies play their Homecoming Game this Thursday against West Kildonan High School.

The kickoff is at 3 p.m.

 

The International Falls Broncos football team lost 45-20 to Deer River, also played Friday.

International Falls Broncos varsity girls volleyball team went one and three in tournament play in Duluth on Saturday.

They opened play Saturday with a loss to Princeton by scores of 23-25, 25-20 and 11-15.

They rallied in their next game, beating Duluth East 13-25, 25-21 and 15-11.

The Broncos were swept in the next game by Brainard, 27-29 and 11-25, before taking Calumet to a three-game set with the Falls losing 20-25, 25-17 and 11-15.

The Broncos junior high girls’ volleyball team, made up of players from the grade 7 and 8 teams, was also in tournament play on Saturday.

The team swept Hibbing in three games, lost to Floodwood in three before taking a pair of matches from Grand Rapids.

 

Tanner Williamson of Fort Frances picked up modified features wins at Thunder City Speedway in Thunder Bay on Friday and Saturday.

Brody Strachan of Devlin was fifth in Friday’s race.

Brandon Pelepetz of Emo, Cameron Brown of Rainy River and Denny Trimble of Fort Frances were also in Friday’s feature but failed to finish.

In Saturday’s feature, Brown was sixth. Jeff Davis finished ninth. Trimble was 16th. Pelepetz had another DNF.

In the mid-west modified division, Jamie Davis of Fort Frances was Saturday’s winner.

Garrett Paul of Fort Frances was sixth, while Brody Strachan of Devlin finished twelfth.

Paul was fourth in Friday’s race.

Strachan, James Lambert of Fort Frances and Davis failed to finish.

 

Devlin’s Jenna Enge and the Jenny Barker rink from Moose Jaw were eliminated in the second round of the Pointsbet Invitational in Fredericton.

They lost to Kaitlynn Lawes in the quarter-finals.

 

Thatcher Haaberg and Dave Bonke are this year’s winners of the Musky Cup fishing tournament in Nestor Falls.

They also won in 2020

They caught four fish, measuring a combined length of 166 inches.

 

Today is the last day of registration for the Emo Minor Hockey League.

The board plans to meet Wednesday to review the numbers and decide if they are enough to proceed with girls’ divisions.

 

On the local schedule today, the International Falls Broncos girls’ volleyball teams travel to Hibbing.

The junior football team is also playing in Hibbing this afternoon.
