More details have emerged regarding the Canada Dental Benefit program.

The legislation is still needing Royal Assent, but the program is slated to start receiving applications on December 1, 2022, and would accept completed dental work dating back to October 1, 2022.

The benefit will be available to kids under 12 whose families make less than $90,000 a year and do not have access to private dental plans. Kids already covered under other government dental programs may also be eligible if certain procedures aren’t paid for by those programs.

There is tiered compensation;

  • $650 for each eligible child when the family’s net income is less than $70,000
  • $390 for each eligible child when the family’s net income is between $70,000 and $79,999
  • $260 for each eligible child when the family’s net income is between $80,000 and $89,999

Applications to apply for the benefit will be done through the Canada Revenue Agency’s website, and that’s the same way families will receive benefit payments.

Ottawa estimates that close to 500,000 Canadian children could benefit from the proposed benefit program.
