Curling Club Readies For New Season

By Randy Thoms Sep 16, 2022 | 1:08 PM

A new season for the Fort Frances Curling Club is approaching.

Registration is well underway. It has accepting applications since the beginning of the month. Participants can also attend one of two in-person registration events to take place on Tuesday, September 20 and Wednesday, September 21.

Board member Christine Denby says you don’t necessarily have to be on an existing team to register.

“If you’ve got someone who maybe isn’t on a team and would like to curl, say in our day league, or they’d like to curl on the Monday night ladies or the Wednesday night’s men’s, we can help find them a team,” says Denby.

The season for most leagues will begin the week of October 10.

A learn-to-curl will also be returning.

“We’re going to run a six-week program for people who want to learn how to curl,” says Denby. “It’s geared to adults, new curlers, learning how to be on the ice, how to sweep, how to throw the rock, all those kinds of fun things.”

Denby says when compared to others, curling is not an expensive sport, and the need for equipment is limited.

Young curlers are also welcome. The club offers Little Rocks, a program for the youngest curlers, bantams and juniors starting in mid-October.

The club is also welcoming back its American curlers.

They have a unique situation in that they have their own organization that is connected to USA Curling.

Because there is no curling rink in International Falls, the Fort Frances rink becomes their home base.
