Halifax is piloting a new speed reduction technique on Robie Street this fall, with the hope of adding it to the municipality’s arsenal of traffic calming measures.

Speed cushions are set to be installed on the peninsula street between Wells and Stairs Streets, before the end of the 2022 construction season.

The new speed cushions are similar to speed humps. The key difference is they have open channels for larger vehicles like busses and ambulances to roll through the gaps undisturbed, while passenger vehicles, which have narrow wheel tracks, will have to drive over the raised sections.

Six sets will be installed; if they’re a success, they’ll be popping up in more places around the city.

There won’t be any impact to on-street parking.
