Traffic Lights For Emo Proposed

By Randy Thoms Sep 15, 2022 | 8:28 AM

Motorists may have to pay attention to traffic lights in Emo next year.

The Ministry of Transportation proposes to install lights on Highway 11-71 at Queen Street.

Township Clerk Crystal Gray says they were to be installed this year.

“MTO did put out for tender this year for the lights to be done, and the tenders all come in all significantly overpriced. So none of the tenders were accepted, and they’re retendering again,” says Gray.

The goal is to have the lights in place by next fall.

Gray says there have been several close calls at the intersection between vehicles and pedestrians, including a school crossing guard that was nearly recently struck.

Councillor Harrold Boven welcomes the news that the Ministry is looking at lights.

“With what you see happening there, something needed to be done. People are running into people. Our disability folks are having a hard time. There are just many things,” says Boven.

The speed limit does reduce to 50 kilometres per hour through that stretch of highway.
