The pledge from the Higgs government regarding the province’s School Food Program has not been fulfilled yet.

However, New Brunswickers may soon hear more information about the program as conversations are well underway, according to the province’s education minister.

“Although we haven’t finished with fulfilling that promise we did start, we had a collaboration with the Heart and Stroke Foundation and ran some pilots, and done a huge amount of work,” Dominic Cardy told reporters last week.

Cardy mentioned there are a lot of schools that already have great food programs, and the department does not want those destroyed by a “one size fits all” government approach.

“Our goal isn’t to have a government system, our goal is to have well-fed kids, and support whatever initiatives that are there, and fill in any holes as to where they exist,” added Cardy.

An announcement regarding New Brunswick’s School Food Program will come in the next few weeks, he said.
