Lieutenant Commander Len Hickey said the call for help came in just before 10 a.m. Monday.
Hickey said a 15-year-old boy had gone overboard while in a 45-foot fishing vessel and local fishermen put out a mayday after they were unable to find him.
A Cormorant helicopter, three Canadian Coast Guard vessels and a Transport Canada aircraft were involved in the search effort.
Hickey said the search area had eventually covered 25 square nautical miles.
