Canadian Screen Awards Going Gender Neutral For Categories

By Katie Nicholls Aug 25, 2022 | 12:25 PM

In a move to be more inclusive, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (the Canadian Academy) announced that they will be changing how they label their categories when giving out awards to performers.

Instead of having “Best lead actor/actress, Comedy” it will now be “Best Lead Performer, Comedy” etc for all the remaining categories.

According to a release the Canadian Academy said;

This change follows a large-scale consultation effort completed over five years, which included committee meetings surrounding rules pertaining to the television and film awards, and included 40 key industry organizations.

This change will be effective for the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards.

Many tv and film performers have announced where they stand on their own pro-nouns, with many including those details on their social media handles.

The performance categories in film and television for the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards will be presented as follows:

Best Lead Performer, Drama Series (Previously Best Lead Actor/Actress, Drama Series)
