Scotian Shores is cleaning up Cape Sable Island this week.

They are seeking volunteers to help tomorrow, and this weekend with removal of items, including lobster traps.

Kristen Hawboldt, local coordinator for Scotian Shores says they’re gathering up the trash this week.

“We are making piles. so that when it comes time to haul it, we’re not needing to run all over the place. We’ll have piles of traps, bags, and other debris,” says Hawboldt.

Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m to 4 p.m, they’re asking for help with the hauling away of the items.

Hawboldt says they’ve seen marine debris from as far back as the 80s.

“Eventually the gear makes it way somewhere, and we hope to be able to clean it all up. In Yarmouth County this year, we’ve cleaned over 50,000 pounds.”

She says they hauled away 13,000 pounds of waste earlier this month from Cape Sable Island, including 200 lobster traps.

A cleanup was also held yesterday in Belliveau’s Cove.
