A late Moncton city councillor now has a park named after him.

Brian Hicks Park is the new name for Hamilton Heights Park in the north end on Evergreen Drive.

Brian Hicks served as a city councillor in Ward 3 for 20 years from 1999 until 2016 when he decided to run for mayor and lost to Dawn Arnold.

After a byelection in 2018, he reclaimed his seat for another two years.

Deputy mayor Bryan Butler, a fellow councillor and friend, put forth the motion at Tuesday’s regular council meeting after seeking approval from his family.

City council was fully supportive.

Hicks was 73 when he died last November.

The City is currently making improvements to the park including a new centralized shade shelter and playground zone, new pathways and upgrades to the basketball court.
