The cost of rent in Halifax is up 33 per cent in the last two years.

A new report show the average cost for a one-bedroom is $1,650 while a two-bedroom is over $2,100.

The report on Rentals.ca indicates despite the threat of a recession, the rental market remains strong because of elevated immigration levels and low unemployment rates.

Year over year, average monthly rent in July for a one-bedroom in Halifax was up 4.6 per cent and up 4.2 per cent for a two-bedroom. But month over month, average rents in Halifax were down 3.7 per cent for a one-bedroom and down 1.3 per cent for a two-bedroom.

Halifax finished 17th on the list of 35 cities for average monthly rent.

Meantime, Nova Scotia had the third highest average rent in July of the seven provinces at $2,220, but that’s a 25 per cent increase year over year.
