A new way for those with physical challenges to access Stoney Island Beach on Cape Sable Island.

Last month, a series of ‘mobi-mats’ were installed at the beach, making it easier for those in wheelchairs, and those who can’t walk on the sand to get closer to the water.

It’s part of the Municipality of Barrington’s Beach Strategy and Accessibility Plan.

Barrington’s Director of Marketing and Tourism Suzy Atwood says they’ve had an overwhelming response.

“People have reached out to us saying they haven’t been on the beach in years, because they haven’t been able to walk through the sand or get to the beach. These are a gamechanger,” says Atwood.

She says many residents of seniors homes have been enjoying the beach this summer.

The project cost 22-thousand dollars, with nearly 13-thousand coming from the provincial community ACCESS-Ability program.

Atwood says there is a municipal plan for beaches, and they’re looking at making others in the area more accessible.
