Unclaimed Money for Canadians

By Randy Thoms Aug 12, 2022 | 8:58 AM

Millions in uncashed cheques could be yours.

The Canada Revenue Agency says those who have uncashed cheques will be notified in the coming year.

Spokesperson Breanne Stephenson says $1.4 billion is waiting to be claimed.

“As of May 2022, there were an estimated 8.9 million uncashed checks with the CRA, and we want to make sure this money ends up where it belongs, in taxpayers’ pockets,” says Stephenson.

You can see if you are owed money by checking My Account on the CRA’s website.

“We strongly encourage taxpayers to register for my account. This is a safe way to see if they have a long-lost check from the CRA,” says Stephenson.

Since the launch of the My Account initiative, approximately 2 million uncashed checks valued at $802 million have been redeemed by Canadians in the last two years.

Stephenson also encourages Canadians to register for direct deposit.

That ensures you never miss future payments and your cheques go directly into your bank account.
