Five alleged impaired drivers were removed from roadways in the Kennebecasis Valley on Wednesday night.

So far in August, the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force (KRPF) has apprehended 15 impaired drivers.

Sgt. Evan Scott, who leads the traffic services unit, mentioned the force has seen a significant increase in impaired motorists compared to August 2021.

“This month so far, we have removed 15 impaired drivers from our roadways, compared to two for the same period last year, so if you look at the per cent difference you’re looking at a 650 per cent increase,” said Scott.

“As well, on a yearly number, looking at the same time frame between last year and this year, we’ve seen a total increase of 18.7 per cent in the number of impaired drivers we have removed from our roadways.”

Scott mentioned the force continues to increase its presence on roadways as one of the force’s strategic priorities to both identify and apprehend impaired drivers.

“We do this by increasing manpower to bolster our current traffic section, as well as patrol services, so we’re adding numbers on the street to accomplish this,” he said.

“As well, we continue to be proactive as impaired driving is still the leading cause of criminal death in Canada, and we understand that and continue to work towards making our roadways safer.”

Scott said the force encourages other motorists to report impaired drivers or anyone they suspect to be under the influence while driving.

He added that it is always important to have a plan for a safe ride home.

“Make a plan to get home safely and that you’re not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol because you’re just putting yourself and others at risk.”
