Saint John police have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with an assault and multiple theft investigations.

Police responded to Queen Street South around 7:30 a.m. Monday after someone tried to steal a vehicle.

In a news release Tuesday, police said a witness interrupted an unknown man trying to steal his neighbour’s vehicle.

The suspect attempted to flee on a bicycle when the vehicle owner confronted him. The suspect threatened the vehicle owner with a weapon and left the area,” said the release.

No physical injuries were reported, according to police.

About two hours later, an officer spotted the suspect on Saint Andrews Street. He was arrested for attempting to steal the vehicle, assault with a weapon, and possession of stolen property.

Police said the man had stolen property linked to other thefts from vehicles in the Carmarthen Street and Queen Street areas.

He was released on an undertaking and will appear in court on October 18.

Investigators are asking people in the Carmarthen Street and Queen Street areas to report any missing property from their vehicles.
