Town Discusses Christmas Tree for Rainy Lake Square

By Randy Thoms Aug 8, 2022 | 9:43 AM

The town of Fort Frances is looking at how to get a Christmas tree up at Rainy Lake Square.

The Fort Frances Downtown Business Improvement Association made a request last fall.

Operations and Facilities Manager Travis Rob says they are limited to ways of securing a tree safely.

He says there is a catch basin that could be used.

“It’s quite large, so we’d have to do something kind of within that catch basin structure to hold the tree more tightly, and then we have to try to find locations to guide it off. The alternative to that would be actually digging up the square and placing something in the ground, not something I’m really a fan of,” says Rob.

Rob is proposing the BIA engage an engineer to come up with a stand that might be more suitable.
Councillor John McTaggart would like to see what can be done to make it possible for a Christmas tree to be erected.

“The Rainy Lake square is meant for this kind of thing, and I really would like to support the BIA in trying to get a tree into the square and see how creative we can be to make it happen,” says McTaggart.

The issue comes before town council during their meeting tonight.
