Police seize loaded gun during Dartmouth arrest

Police seized a loaded firearm while arresting a man in Dartmouth on Sunday.

They say the 21-year-old was being tracked by officers as part of an ongoing investigation near Demetreous Lane just after 8 p.m.

When they caught up to him on foot, officers seized the gun.

Jayree Vontaze Downey has been charged with various firearms offences including the following:

  • Possession weapon dangerous to the public
  • Unsafe handling of a firearm
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm without license
  • Possession restricted firearm with ammunition
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to court order (x 2)
  • Obstructing a peace officer
  • Fail to comply with a court order (x 2)

Downey was scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on Monday.
