Certainly not something you hear of every day.

According to TimeandDate.com, the third rock from the sun had it’s shortest day on record since using atomic clocks to measure the Earth’s rotational speed.

On June 29, 2022, Earth completed one spin in 1.59 milliseconds less than 24 hours. This is the latest in a series of speed records for Earth since 2020.

Scientists are unsure as to why this is happening but there are many theory’s out there including that it could be the “Chandler Wobble”. Timeanddate describe that as “a small, irregular movement of Earth’s geographical poles across the surface of the globe”.

That could eventually require a negative leap second, meaning clocks might have to skip a second. But that’s unlikely to happen any time soon.
